Newton School District Haiti Fundraisers Merriam Ave School: Hearts for Haiti
The earthquake in Haiti left millions without the very basics necessities of food, water, and shelter. In an effort to help, the Merriam Avenue School community is starting Hearts for Haiti.
Children can purchase a heart for 50¢, and they can purchase as many hearts as they wish. They can decorate the heart, write a wish for Haiti, or simply write their name on the heart. As hearts are purchased, they will be placed on a wall in the school so the children can see how many hearts are reaching out to help.
This is an opportunity for our school community to see we are a part of wider global community. Together, we can help to make a difference

The fourth grade class is having a bake sale at the close of the day on February 3rd. Proceeds will go to the Haiti Relief fund as well as to the Newton Family that recently lost their apartment to a fire
Newton High School: Newton High School French Club will be having a bake sale at the Newton Shoprite on Saturday, Feburary 6 from 9a - Noon. ALL proceeds will go to the Haiti Relief Fund. ******* Lauri (Lauren) Gill is the Administrative Coordinator of Volunteer & Youth Services for the American Red Cross, Sussex County Chapter in Newton. We asked her how we as a school can help the people in Haiti. She said sending money is the best way to help as there are issues with getting items there, having a place to store the items, and having people in charge of distributing them. We have started a collection jar in the cafeteria periods 4-7 and are asking for anyone who wishes to donate any amount of money they wish to please do so. You can also send donations to the link below if you wish or make a donation at the Sussex County chapter and they will ensure it is earmarked for Haiti Relief and send it to "National."

Halsted Middle School:
During 8th period on W ednesday, Sam Paul (Brittany Barthelemy's brother and former HMS student), will be coming in to speak about the Haitian culture. His family members are descendents from there. The Red Cross in Newton will come in and speak about what their role is in helping Haiti and how the money we raise will help out. The fundraiser slogan is "Halsted's Helping Hands for Haiti". It will involve purchasing a paper hand for $0.50 and writing one's name on it to show their support and care for those who were affected by the earthquake. Anyone can buy as many hands as they want. They will be sold during lunches and, most likely, after school.
