The Newton Public Schools will be providing a combination of meal programs to start the school year. Due to COVID, the Department of Agriculture has extended the Summer Food Service Program through December 31st. Breakfast and lunch will be provided free to all students. Subject to approval of the district's application, the Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) will be providing dinner and after school snack free to all students Grades 3-8 at Halsted Middle School and Merriam Avenue School. The CACFP program is only open to grade levels allowed to participate in the C2C program (grades 3-8), but participation in the C2C program is not required to receive the after school snack and dinner.
The district will await further guidance from the Department of Agriculture for planning meal service after December 31st. It is very important that applications for the 2020-21 Free and Reduced School Meals program are still completed. Although meals are free for all students through December 31st, the state may require the completed applications for January. Families that qualify for the Free and Reduced School Meals program may also be eligible for other services.
