Vote Newton for School Spirit NJSIAA, to foster school spirit throughout the state, is partnering with ShopRite on a new, digital way for association member schools to engage in head-to-head competition. Starting today (April 29), students, fans, alumni, and community members across New Jersey will have the chance to support their teams via social in the NJSIAA Digital Spirit Challenge, presented by ShopRite.
“ShopRite is committed to the students and member schools of the NJSIAA and proud to support the Spirit Challenge,” said Robert Zuehlke, Manager of Corporate Social Responsibility for ShopRite. “In this unique year, we are excited for an opportunity to help schools engage their communities and show their school pride.”
The social media event will be hosted on the NJSIAA Twitter account (@NJSIAA) and results in six winners; one per group classification. The first round will be conducted via poll format to determine the top 16 schools in each group. Those schools will then be placed in digital, bracket-style tournaments, to determine head-to-head matchups. Each matchup will be conducted via Twitter poll, with the school getting more votes advancing to the next round. Early-round matchups will feature two days of voting, but in the later rounds, each matchup will last just one day.
“COVID-19 has already affected many parts of our lives,” said NJSIAA Chief Operating Officer Colleen Maguire. “We all miss the excitement of an in-person competition, but this challenge is a great way for student-athletes, coaches, teachers, and community members to showcase their school spirit without compromising the health and safety of others.”
The opening-round polls are active now and will remain open through 5/5. Subsequent round matchups for each state Group Classification will all be assigned a specific day of the week.
We encourage everyone to participate in each round, as there will be multiple matchups to be decided.

Please find a message from NHS Junior Julia Decker;
My name is Julia Decker and I am a Junior at Newton High School. For the past 4 years, I have been raising awareness and funds to help children in China and Cambodia get their lip and/or palates repaired. I have successfully raised enough money for 7 repair surgeries over the last 4 years. This started as a school project but has grown into so much more.
A cleft lip and/or palate is a split or opening in the upper lip or roof of the mouth or both. Babies with clefts have a difficult time eating and gaining weight. For the past five years, I have paired up with the organization “Love Without Boundaries” to help sponsor the repair surgeries of orphaned and vulnerable children who are unable to afford the care that they so desperately need.
I was born with a bilateral cleft lip and palate and lived in an orphanage in Central China until I was three and a half years old. An anonymous donor sponsored my lip repair surgery which enabled me to drink formula and grow and thrive. It is my desire to pay it forward and help as many children as I am able.
I’m excited to share that I was recently matched with 2 babies awaiting surgery. If you would like to learn more about my project, please check out the link below or donate. Feel free to share my fundraiser on any social media platforms that you use.

Deliver Together High school students from New Jersey have launched Deliver Together to positively impact those affected by the novel Coronavirus (COVID-19). Working together with community leaders, we are organizing free-delivery and errand-runs to mitigate the spread of the disease among those most vulnerable. We believe that it is our obligation to provide aid to those in-need and protect the them from unnecessarily journeying outside the safety of their homes. All the funds provided will cover operational costs, including initiating a website, compensating for gas, and protective gear for volunteers. This initiative will drastically lower the chances of elderly coming in contact with the disease by ensuring they remain within the confines of their home. Deliver Together is counting on your support to help move this initiative forward and defeat and the novel Coronavirus. We welcome any donations and suggestions and are extremely grateful for those who support this initiative!

There’s an incredible new opportunity for recovered COVID-19 patients to help their community. In coordination with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the Red Cross is seeking people who are fully recovered from COVID-19 to sign up to donate plasma to help current COVID-19 patients. If you have recovered from a positive COVID-19 diagnosis and wish to be a convalescent plasma donor, or if you know somebody who has recovered and may want to help in this way, please visit our COVID-19 Convalescent Plasma Donor Information Page.
