Apply for the Youth Preparedness Council
Do you know a teen who has a passion for preparedness? FEMA is accepting applications for its 2021 Youth Preparedness Council (YPC). Since 2012, FEMA has brought youth from across the Nation together to serve on the YPC. Each year, teens apply to the YPC for an opportunity to join FEMA in encouraging emergency preparedness. YPC members are selected for two-year terms. As part of the YPC, members can build leadership skills and represent their schools and communities. They also share their perspectives, feedback, and opinions with FEMA. The YPC gives youth the chance to meet peers from across the country and work on projects, such as preparedness fairs for their communities. A virtual summit in July gives members a chance to meet each other and hear from FEMA experts. The application period is open to teens in grades 8-11 until March 7, 2021. Learn more on Ready Kids and apply here!

Please find a message from NHS Junior Julia Decker;
My name is Julia Decker and I am a Junior at Newton High School. For the past 4 years, I have been raising awareness and funds to help children in China and Cambodia get their lip and/or palates repaired. I have successfully raised enough money for 7 repair surgeries over the last 4 years. This started as a school project but has grown into so much more.
A cleft lip and/or palate is a split or opening in the upper lip or roof of the mouth or both. Babies with clefts have a difficult time eating and gaining weight. For the past five years, I have paired up with the organization “Love Without Boundaries” to help sponsor the repair surgeries of orphaned and vulnerable children who are unable to afford the care that they so desperately need.
I was born with a bilateral cleft lip and palate and lived in an orphanage in Central China until I was three and a half years old. An anonymous donor sponsored my lip repair surgery which enabled me to drink formula and grow and thrive. It is my desire to pay it forward and help as many children as I am able.
I’m excited to share that I was recently matched with 2 babies awaiting surgery. If you would like to learn more about my project, please check out the link below or donate. Feel free to share my fundraiser on any social media platforms that you use.

Deliver Together High school students from New Jersey have launched Deliver Together to positively impact those affected by the novel Coronavirus (COVID-19). Working together with community leaders, we are organizing free-delivery and errand-runs to mitigate the spread of the disease among those most vulnerable. We believe that it is our obligation to provide aid to those in-need and protect the them from unnecessarily journeying outside the safety of their homes. All the funds provided will cover operational costs, including initiating a website, compensating for gas, and protective gear for volunteers. This initiative will drastically lower the chances of elderly coming in contact with the disease by ensuring they remain within the confines of their home. Deliver Together is counting on your support to help move this initiative forward and defeat and the novel Coronavirus. We welcome any donations and suggestions and are extremely grateful for those who support this initiative!
