As part of a wonderful year of FBLA achievements, The Halsted Middle School Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA), led by Theresa Iliff, launched a Community Service Project centered around National Suicide Awareness. They honored Anthony Monderine who was an FBLA alumni who attended Sayreville War Memorial High School and recently passed away. Anthony was such a bright and kindhearted young man who touched the heart of the entire Sayreville community as well as throughout the state with his participation in FBLA. Halsted FBLA members developed the kindness challenge. Their goal was to tell their fellow classmates they are valued and they are loved. They created sticky notes and taped them on the lockers of over 350 students. They created over 140 different statements filled with words of kindness and love. Examples of their messages, “You are kind”, “You are brave”, “I see you”, “You rock”, “You matter” and “I love your smile”. The goal is to spread positivity, acceptance, and kindness as well as promote National Suicide Health Prevention. Halsted Middle School students will be presenting their community service project at the 2024 NJ FBLA State Middle School Leadership Conference on April 8th. They are the first FBLA program ever chartered at Halsted and the only middle school program in Sussex County. The Halsted Middle School FBLA members want everyone to know that the lesson learned is that even small acts of kindness can make a huge difference in your community.
